PRESERVING AND PROTECTING APPEAL RIGHTS AT THE TRIAL COURT LEVEL
APPELLATE ADVOCACY PROGRAM
MONDAY, MARCH 29, 2021
Judges Laura Tocci and James Ross will present a CLE seminar entitled “Preserving and Protecting Appeal Rights at the Trial Court Level” on Monday, March 29, 2021 at the Beaver County Courthouse in Courtroom No. 6. Registration will begin promptly at 3:30 p.m. The seminar will follow from 4:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m.
This one (1) hour substantive credit seminar is the first segment in the Appellate Advocacy Program for Young Lawyers in the Beaver County Bar Association for 2021. In this program, the Young Lawyers will receive instruction from, and work with, experienced lawyers and Trial and Appellate Court Judges to learn both the basics and the do’s and don’ts of appellate advocacy, starting with the steps necessary to preserve and protect appeal rights at the trial court level. The first session with Judges Tocci and Ross will serve and educate the participants on the steps to take and the rules and statutory provisions to learn and be aware of to protect appellate rights at the trial court level, as well as the rules that govern trial court jurisdiction once an appeal is filed.
This seminar has been approved by the Pennsylvania Supreme Court Continuing Legal Education Board for one (1) hour of substantive credit.

- Well- being strategies to reduce or alleviate these conditions
- Tips for maintaining a healthy and productive work/life balance
- Ethical dilemmas created by the Coronavirus crisis, including remote supervision of attorneys and staff, record and timekeeping, data security and confidentiality in the remote office setting.
- Why legal professionals are at higher risk to develop mental health and substance use disorders
- Challenges and barriers facing legal professionals from seeking help
- The free, confidential services provided by Lawyers Assistance Programs to lawyers, their family members, judges and law students
- The role that education plays in breaking the stigma and fear associated with addiction and mental illness in the legal profession
- Resources available to both lawyers and support staff with emphasis on COVID-19 issues
- The early warning signs of impairment, with special emphasis on stress and vicarious trauma, including the COVID-19 pandemic.
- The free services that Lawyers Assistance Programs provide to lawyers, judges, their family members and law students.
- Tips for dealing with the anxiety, stress and fear that the COVID-19 pandemic has created.
- A close look at what barriers exist that prevent lawyers from seeking the help they need will be provided.
- The role that education plays in breaking the stigma and fear associated with addiction and mental illness in the legal profession.
- How best to approach the impaired individual.
- Ethical considerations regarding the duty to report an impaired attorney and the exceptions granted to Lawyer assistance programs. Lastly, he will discuss the ethical challenges imposed by the imposed isolation of the pandemic and it’s possible long lasting effect on the legal profession.

BRIDGE THE GAP
The Supreme Court recently mandated the Bridge the Gap Program to be a post-admission requirement and charged the Pennsylvania Continuing Legal Education Board with its administration. Newly admitted lawyers, who had not previously completed the program as a pre-admission requirement, will have until their first CLE compliance deadline to complete the four hour Bridge the Gap requirement.
The Beaver County Bar Association will hold two (2) Bridge the Gap seminars per year – March & October.
